Pediatric Chiropractic Care in Upper St. Clair

Special attention must be placed on children because most problems we see in adults usually have a start in childhood.

Often times when a new patient comes to our clinic and sees an infant or child being adjusted, the initial comment usually is I didn't know you treated children. Think about this however; the spine is subjected to stress from the very moment of birth.

Childbirth itself is the first shock to the spine and nervous system that an infant receives. Think about the pressure on the infant spine at the time of labour, and the pull on the infants head and neck even during abnormal uncomplicated delivery. 95% of Subluxations are caused by the process of being born - even in adults!

Dr. Towbin, a Harvard Medical School specialist, found that approximately 85% of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) is a direct result of trauma to the infant's spine during the process of birth.

As well, Dr. Gutmann, a German specialist, found that 80% of all children have a Subluxation in the upper part of the neck. He has shown that this type of a Subluxation can cause lowered resistance to infection, frequent colds, ear problems, chronic tonsillitis, etc. Clinical research also indicates that these problems respond faster with a chiropractic adjustment, than antibiotic therapy.

A common result of an uncorrected childhood Subluxation is a condition known as Scoliosis (spinal curvature) most often the result of a pelvic malfunction. We have just completed a major research study on this and it should be published shortly.

Vertebral Subluxations can also be caused by the following:

  • wearing tight diapers that do not allow proper hip movement and development
  • being placed in Jolly-Jumpers which stress spinal discs before they are fully developed
  • gregarious in-laws who insist on throwing children in the air and thereby create a whiplash micro-trauma to a delicate spine and nervous system, etc.

Then, there is the usual process of crawling, walking, running, and other activities. All of these can create vertebral Subluxations. As youngsters become older, other incidents can create vertebral Subluxations such as a fall downstairs, off a bike, out of a tree, off a skateboard, or while ice skating, etc...

If allowed to remain, these Subluxations then become the starting point of nervous system and body malfunction. Much like a snowball rolling down a hill- gathering speed and momentum.

If not corrected, vertebral Subluxations can lead to degeneration of spinal discs, abnormal calcium deposits, ligament instability and the onset of arthritis. Not a good thing.

Proper spinal care is essential to your child's health. Please let us check your children for Subluxations.
